If you are hesitant about helping care for someone, here are answers to help you.
I don't know what the Care Receiver likes to do or, indeed, is able to do
- you can have a look at their current Conditions and Abilities to see what they can do
- read their Profile (background, strengths, preferences, memories, etc.) to see what they like
- use your imagination or dive into the Activities bin which contains hundreds of suggestions
I don't know what needs to be done and I hate having to ask
- you don't need to ask!
- look at the Task list and simply click "I'll do this" beside any task, or
- look at the care Receiver's needs (or the primary Caregiver's needs) and help them out. It's that easy.
There are some things I can do well and others things that I don't like doing
- when you join a team you can list your strengths and your preferences
- select only the Tasks and Activities that you like doing
- if you are happy, it will show
I have little caregiving experience
- it doesn't matter
- do what you know, enjoy and are good at (e.g. activities of daily living)
- learn from other team members
- and then challenge yourself to take on new tasks when you are comfortable
My schedule varies and I have limited time
- that's fine
- contribute when you can
- note on the Team list when you are/ are not available
- any contribution, any at all, will help. Inaction helps no one
I don't live close to the Care Receiver
- do tasks that are independent of location (e.g. find information online, making telephone calls, booking appointments)
- provide social contact by telephone or webcam
How do I stay in touch if I help only occasionally?
- look at the Messages board for team info, tips and updates
- use the team list to call someone for an update
- check the current conditions and abilities
- look at the list of recent tasks and activities.
Anything else?
- yes, one last thing. Every contribution, large or small, will make the lives of the Care Receiver, the primary Caregiver and yourself, richer. Your contribution is a gift to everyone.
